Why? Because you don’t own your social media audience—but you do own your email list.
Today, I’m breaking down how to build an email list that actually works (and won’t make your audience roll their eyes). Whether you're knee-deep in sticky notes and snack time, or scaling your business between meetings, these 5 steps will help you grow an authentic, profitable email community.
No one wants to “sign up for updates.” That’s boring.
Instead, offer something valuable: a free checklist, guide, discount code, or template. For example, I offer a Buy One Get One Free coupon for custom business cards or stickers—that’s a popular one. Think about what your audience actually wants and serve it up in exchange for their email.
Pro Tip: Frame it as “Grab your free [insert item]” instead of “Join my list.”
Don’t send people through a maze. Keep it simple:

Name + Email = Done.

Add your signup link everywhere: IG bio, website, email signature.

Use a QR code or short link for quick mobile signups.
I’ve used Shopify’s built-in email feature, but you can start with free tools like Mailchimp or Kit (formerly ConvertKit). Do your research and choose what works for your stage of business.
This one’s big. People want connection—not corporate-speak.
Be personal. Be real. Write your emails like you're chatting with a friend (not your BFF who knows all your inside jokes, but the friend who’s new to your world). Share stories, sneak peeks, and wins behind the scenes.
Your audience signed up to hear from you, so give them that.
Nobody likes being shouted at with “BUY NOW!”
Instead, weave your offers into value-packed content. Example: “Struggling with [problem]? I’ve got [solution] that might help. Check it out here.” It feels like a conversation, not a pushy pitch.
Consistency > Perfection.
Aim for once a week or biweekly. That’s enough to stay top-of-mind without annoying people. And don’t overthink it. Just show up, serve, and connect.
Email is where you own the conversation. No algorithm changes. No disappearing content. Just you and the people who genuinely want to hear from you.
